Somewhere about twenty thousand kilometres above your head, a fleet of satellites is doing something almost boring: broadcasting the time. Each one carries an atomic clock and shouts, over and over, this is who I am and this is exactly when I said it. Your phone is not talking back. It is simply listening, like a very patient eavesdropper.

The trick is called trilateration. Your phone hears several of these time-stamped messages, notices that each one arrived a hair late, and turns those tiny delays into distances.
